Just another fleeting thought...
I've always been considered a pack rat, a trait that is perhaps better for prepping, than for my marriage. But I have recently been made aware of a psychological disorder known as Compulsive Hoarding. [SEE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsive_hoarding]I have no way of knowing if this is an issue for any preppers, but its something that the prepping community should be well aware of.
It seems to me that prepping to a compulsive hoarder is almost like alcohol to an alcoholic or a casino to a compulsive gambler. In other words, it could be a very dangerous mix.
I think it is necessary to focus on the concept of stocking in the 'prepper community'. As obvious as this might sound, the sole purpose is to be prepared. And the best way to do that is not only to have the right materials, but to have the right quantities (which can be difficult if one is to be prepared for any eventuality) and perhaps most importantly, organized in the right fashion as to be able to quickly access these materials when needed.
From my limited understanding of Compulsive Hoarders, this would be an almost insurmountable task for some suffering from this illness. Even if they had the right materials, the quantities may not be appropriate and the materials will definitely not be set aside in an organized fashion.
In conclusion, preparing is all about knowing what to buy, how much to buy and how to organize. A common pack rat (Level I Hoarder) can usually handle this, but when you start purchasing an unreasonable amount of stuff and can't find anything, its time to start looking for some help...
I just found another prepper source for this. Check out: Kansas Preppers Network: Hoarding vs Prepping
Some people finding our website may be wondering what is a Prepper and why does it have a religious affiliation? Well the short answer is...A Prepper is the modern day survivalist. It's not (necessarily) a right-wing militiaman preparing for Armageddon in the boondocks of Montana. But better represented by a normal, educated, middle class individual perhaps living in the most urban of cities, preparing themselves physically and mentally for any upcoming disaster, natural or man-made. This could include anything from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions, social unrest to an act of terrorism. Preparations include: food supply, medical supply, weapons supply etc. and the knowledge and skills to use them. Of course, a Jewish Prepper is just a designation for a small niche of the Prepper Community that is of the Jewish Faith. We are non-profit and nonpartisan. Enjoy!
