Jewish Preppers?

Some people finding our website may be wondering what is a Prepper and why does it have a religious affiliation? Well the short answer is...A Prepper is the modern day survivalist. It's not (necessarily) a right-wing militiaman preparing for Armageddon in the boondocks of Montana. But better represented by a normal, educated, middle class individual perhaps living in the most urban of cities, preparing themselves physically and mentally for any upcoming disaster, natural or man-made. This could include anything from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions, social unrest to an act of terrorism. Preparations include: food supply, medical supply, weapons supply etc. and the knowledge and skills to use them. Of course, a Jewish Prepper is just a designation for a small niche of the Prepper Community that is of the Jewish Faith. We are non-profit and nonpartisan. Enjoy!

Biblical Sources

Just to add two more Biblical sources to David's posting regarding the first preppers:

Prior to Joseph storing food for seven years...

When Esau was to meet up with Jacob. He feared that he would be killed and took the initiative to divide his family, flock and belongings into two camps. Should one camp be overridden the other would survive.

The second example, and perhaps the most famous, is that of Noah and his preparations for hundreds of years for the eventual flood and destruction of the world!

I'm sure there are many more examples from the Torah. Please let us know what you can come up with...

Alex Shrugged said...: Hmm... there are several lessons that Jacob/Israel learned: make a deal but check the results. Jacob agreed to work seven years in order to marry Rachel but the father slipped in Rachel's older sister instead. This is why the groom always bedecks the bride (places the veil) prior to the wedding. Or as President Reagan said, "Trust but verify!" :-)

Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of beans. There is a lesson there. If you go into the wilderness unprepared, you may be willing to sell-out your entire future for a day's meager existence. The lesson is to prepare first so that you are not placed in that position willingly.; January 12, 2010 at 7:28 PM

Josh 'Survivor' received his Bachelor's degree in Talmudic law from a prestigious rabbinical college in Jerusalem. He then served as a commander in the IDF and officer in the United States Air Force aux. before graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a Master's degree in Public and International Affairs and a global studies certificate in conflict resolution with a regional concentration in the Middle East. David grew up a typical Ashkenazic kid in NY. He graduated from a very liberal Liberal Arts college, went to medical school in PA and returned to NYC to do his residency in Internal Medicine. He moved to Seattle in the early 1990's where he fell in love, got married, fell out of love and divorced. In 2007, he joined the USAF as a "Flight Surgeon" where his patients were the pilots and crew of the Air Mobility Command. He separated from the USAF in late 2009. In the early part of the 1990's, he got over his fear of firearms and has been plinking ever since. He has learned that guns are tools, not inhabited by evil nor benign spirits. Like tools, they have been used for good and evil. He slowly learned that Jews have historically been too often at the wrong end of a gun. He considers himself lucky enough to live in a country where his right to self defense is understood to be unalienable and granted by God.
